Indianapolis and the north suburbs are in line for one of the greatest celestial phenomena known to man–a total solar eclipse. On Monday April 8th, 2024, the sky will go dark for a few minutes in the afternoon as the moon passes between the sun and the earth–blocking the sun completely.
You must be wearing appropriate eye protection (eclipse glasses) in order to view this anomaly safely. Watching the eclipse with the naked eye will result in eye damage, including pets!
The sky will begin to change around 1:50pm with totality setting in at 3:06pm. Below is a list of totality times in Indy and the north suburbs:
Carmel: 3 minutes 29 seconds
Fishers: 3 minutes 38 seconds
Noblesville: 3 minutes 27 seconds
Westfield: 3 minutes 18 seconds
Indianapolis: 3 minutes 51 seconds
Being one of the only midwest metropolises in the line of totality, the Indy metro area will draw huge crowds during the weekend of April 5th - April 8th. Local businesses, municipalities, and museums are planning celebrations of epic proportions to ring in this once in a lifetime event. Most area schools are closed Monday, April 8th.
Many event hosts will have limited amounts of eclipse glasses, but I’d recommend purchasing your own in advance. I bought these for my family on Amazon!
If you are traveling into the Indianapolis area or are local and want to celebrate in the community, below are some of the top Eclipse Events happening in and around Indianapolis.
